Abstract

Background: Perinatal mental health disorders are a critical maternal health concern because their effects extend beyond mothers to infant development and family well-being. Non-pharmacological interventions offer safe and holistic approaches that may support maternal mental health while reducing concerns related to medication.
Purpose: This scoping review aimed to map the types, characteristics, and applications of non-pharmacological interventions for perinatal mental health disorders and examine their relevance to modern midwifery practice.
Methods: A scoping review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews framework. Literature searches were conducted on December 10, 2025, in PubMed, Scopus, Wiley, and Research Rabbit. Articles published in English or Indonesian during the past decade and addressing non-pharmacological interventions for perinatal mental health were included. Of 1,089 identified records, 10 articles met the eligibility criteria and were analyzed using a standardized data charting form.
Results: Five themes emerged: intervention types, delivery media, intervention content, provider characteristics, and barriers to implementation. Conclusion: Non-pharmacological interventions can strengthen maternal mental health through education, emotional support, and multidisciplinary collaboration. However, limited access, social stigma, and inadequate provider capacity remain important barriers to sustained implementation in midwifery practice.
